Karl Mattson

Rolla, BC

Description

This above ground bunker/small family emergency shelter, is another one of Mattson's testimonies to the sometimes-bleak vision of mankind's complacent march into a future of uncertainty.

Bio

Northern BC artist Karl Mattson is a self-taught multimedia sculptor whose work often explores themes of environmental uncertainty and social tension. Raised on a fifth-generation family farm, he incorporates salvaged and industrial materials into his sculptures, transforming utilitarian forms into thought-provoking commentary. LIFE POD 001 reflects on humanity’s uneasy relationship with the future and our instinct to seek protection in uncertain times. The bunker-like structure evokes preparedness, isolation, and survival while questioning the systems and choices that shape modern society. Mattson’s work balances bleakness with curiosity, inviting viewers to confront both anxiety and resilience within an increasingly unpredictable world.
